DentalGoodNews|April 1, 2026, a research team from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), in collaboration with Princeton University and the Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology (GIST) in South Korea, has developed an AI 3D printing preview tool named VisiPrint. This tool aims to address material waste caused by repeated prototyping by providing high-precision simulations of the final product's color, texture, and gloss.
The MIT research team pointed out that approximately one-third of materials used in 3D printing end up in landfills due to discarded prototypes. According to the research team, VisiPrint, by combining computer vision models with Generative AI, can generate photorealistic previews in about one minute, requiring only a screenshot from slicing software and a photo of the material.
In dental medical applications, this technology can assist clinicians in ensuring that the color of restorations such as temporary crowns and bridges precisely matches the patient's natural teeth. Previously, as reported by DENTALGOODNEWS (Leading Dental Industry Media, DGN), Stratasys has launched multi-material 3D printed dental models. Its TrueDent® resin has obtained CE Class IIa certification, becoming the first monolithic 3D printed denture solution in Europe to receive this certification, applicable to a market exceeding $2 billion (approximately RMB 13.774 billion).
Currently, VisiPrint is available as a standalone UI and an Ultimaker Cura plugin. According to the MIT research team, in a test involving fields such as dentistry and architecture, participants achieved a 100% success rate in completing preview tasks using VisiPrint, higher than the completion rates using Cura (63%) and Blender (13%).
The VisiPrint team stated that future efforts will focus on further optimizing artifact issues in fine details and expanding beyond material color to process optimization.
