DentalGoodNews|On April 14, 2026, the American Dental Association (ADA) released the CDT 2027 code *changes. This update involves a total of 67 adjustments, including 28 new codes, 33 revisions, and 6 editorial updates, aiming to enhance the accuracy and efficiency of clinical procedure documentation.
In the field of implantology, the new version introduces a dedicated code for the removal of a screw-retained indirect restoration from an implant body to facilitate treatment on the implant body itself. Additionally, a new code for healing cap placement has been added, applicable to clinical scenarios such as post-implantation, second-stage surgery, or removal of an indirect restoration.
Regarding restorative dentistry, the revision to code D2390 (Direct Resin-Based Composite Crown Placement) is significant. Previously limited to anterior teeth, starting with the 2027 version, it will be applicable to all teeth including posterior teeth, broadening the scope of clinical documentation. Furthermore, for orofacial pain management, the new version introduces a series of new codes covering procedures such as injection blocks of the occipital nerve, peripheral nerves, and sphenopalatine ganglion.
According to previous reports by DGN, the ADA recently joined forces with multiple organizations to urge the U.S. Congress to increase oral health funding for the 2027 fiscal year, aiming to strengthen public health infrastructure and address the economic losses caused by untreated oral diseases. This code update reflects the association's ongoing efforts to promote industry standardization and refined management.
According to the ADA announcement, CDT 2027 is expected to be officially released this fall and will take effect on January 1, 2027. The deadline for change requests for CDT 2028 is November 1, 2026.
