DentalGoodNews|Recently, DentaQuest, the second-largest dental benefits administrator in the United States, was hit with a class-action lawsuit in Massachusetts federal court over a massive data breach that occurred in May this year. Plaintiff Amanda Whitlow alleges the company failed to adequately protect the personal private information of approximately 15 million patients. According to disclosures from relevant authorities, this is the largest medical data breach recorded by the U.S. government so far this year.
According to DentaQuest's official notification, the cybersecurity incident occurred between May 17 and 20, 2026, with the company detecting unusual activity on May 20. Preliminary investigations indicate that the compromised information includes names, addresses, Social Security Numbers (SSNs), insurance identification numbers, and related dental and vision health data. The hacker group ShinyHunters has been linked to the intrusion.
The class-action lawsuit (Case No. 1:26-cv-13868) alleges that DentaQuest failed to notify affected individuals in a timely manner: the plaintiff claims the company did not issue formal notifications until August, leaving a window for criminals to commit identity theft. The claims include negligence, breach of implied contract, breach of fiduciary duty, and violations of the Illinois Personal Information Protection Act, seeking monetary damages and injunctive relief.
DentaQuest has engaged Kroll to assist with data analysis and identity protection efforts, and is currently offering 24 months of free credit monitoring, fraud consultation, and identity restoration services to affected individuals. The company also stated that it has strengthened system monitoring and provided additional cybersecurity training to employees.
Headquartered in Massachusetts, DentaQuest provides dental and vision benefits to approximately 32 million people nationwide. Acquired by Sun Life U.S. in 2022, it is the largest administrator of Medicaid and CHIP dental benefits in the United States.
